SYDNEY PELAGICS RUN ON THE SECOND SATURDAY OF EVERY MONTH.

Halicat Tours run whale-watching and general wildlife ‘pelagics’. Half-day whale-watching trips are run seasonally from about June to December.

The best thing about these trips is you get the best bang for your buck. You could just go whale-watching but for little more, you can see a whole range of things you've never dreamed of before.

If you want a really spectacular wildlife trip though, book onto a wildlife pelagic. These run every second Saturday of the month. Led by enthusiastic wildlife guides and experts on seabirds, marine mammals and sharks, you’ll be shown animals you’d never have thought possible to see off Sydney.

Imagine watching a majestic endangered Wandering Albatross, king of seabirds, with a 3 metre wing-span. Whilst everyone is familiar with Humpback Whales migrating up the coast, you’ll also likely see something else. Common Dolphins and Bottlenose Dolphins are quite common. Risso Dolphins, Minke Whales, Pilot Whales, False Killer Whales and Sperm Whales are all regularly seen. This is still one of the only reliable places in the world to see Pygmy Killer Whales. The luckiest passengers have even seen Southern Right Whales and Blue Whales from the trip.

These spectacular trips venture out to the “continental shelf”, where land is just a speck in the distance and the sea below you drops to abyssal depths of a couple of kilometres or so. For $125 per person for a full day, you could have an experience like no other in Sydney … and be back in time for tea!
