Itinerary

Day 1-3 After our first night in Port Moresby, we head to Varirata National Park to look for Raggiana Birds of Paradise and a variety of other birds and animals. For the rest of the time, we’ll explore the culture, buildings and art warehouses in Port Moresby then head to coastal villages, home to the Motu people who have preserved their traditional way of life.

Day 4 You’ll fly to Mt Hagen to be met by your hosts at Kumul Landowner Lodge. From the lodge’s verandah you can view feeders that attract Brown Sicklebills and Ribbon-tailed Astrapias, two striking species of Birds of Paradise. In the afternoon enjoy expert guided birding around the Kumul area.

Day 5 Spend the day exploring further afield. The local area is home to all three of the endemic bird families of PNG. Blue and Lesser Bird of Paradise are among those that can be seen here. You will travel through magnificent countryside with tumbling waterfalls, coffee plantations and verdant tropical jungle. If the weather permits we may swim in one of the clear mountain pools.

Day 6 The Kumul area is famous for orchids. A local lodge owner is a knowledgeable orchid gardener and will delight in showing you his floral creations. In the afternoon, we’ll visit the village of Anji Walya to learn about Highland village life, which is quite different from the lowlands.

Day 7 Transfer back to the airport, flight to Port Moresby.
