This trip will have you listening to the world in a new way and appreciating sound and music from an entirely fresh perspective.

There is a wonderful sonic diversity to be heard in the natural world - birdsong, frog choruses, seasonal insect choirs, mammal calls… but what can we learn from all these sounds around us? Nature sound virtuoso Andrew Skeoch is a bioacoustic researcher, musician and sound recordist, who's been recording wild habitats around  the world for 20 years.

"I feel that we need to listen to the natural world afresh, and hear ourselves as part of it. Perhaps then we can find more organic ways to express ourselves, and celebrate our natural place in the biosphere", he says.

Andrew will oversee your journey to explore how nature uses sound to communicate, survive and adapt. In the process, he will share his unique feeling for nature, plus fieldcraft, recording and listening skills. Andrew is an engaging communicator, and his insights and conclusions will leave you fascinated and appreciating the natural world anew.

Itinerary

Wednesday (L,D) Make your way to Bairnsdale (by train from Melbourne, or drive) where you'll be met just before lunch by your guide from Gippsland High Country Tours and driven to your accommodation at Gipsy Pt. The late afternoon is spent settling in, getting to know everyone and after dinner (provided) a quick introductory briefing from Andrew and an early night.

Thursday (B, L) We'll get up bright and early to experience dawn chorus. We'll have a light snack in the bush and spend the early morning getting an introduction to recording techniques, listening skills and birdsong identification. After daylight we'll return to our accommodation for a quick breakfast and to refresh before heading off to a different location to listen, walk and explore. Lunch is served back at the lodge before free time or relaxation or a nap. Later in the afternoon Andrew will present a talk 'Biophony' on how sound works in nature. Dinner will be at the local eatery in Mallacoota (own expense) and on the way home, an evening excursion to listen for bats, owls, frogs and gliders.

Friday (B, L, D) Depart early to a different location with two different acoustic landscapes for the dawn chorus. This time we'll actively listen, using the skills and knowledge we learnt the day before. We'll do some recording (maybe you would like to try a recording yourself?), interpretation and discuss this. After returning to the lodge for breakfast, we board a boat with a local skipper to discover the wildlife and serene beauty of the Genoa River. What different soundscapes will be encounter? After a busy morning, enjoy a hearty lunch, then some rest time or a nap.  Late afternoon join Andrew for a presentation on the Evolution of Music and Human Culture. The evening will finish again with dinner, this time provided at the accommodation, and a last chance to take an evening excursion at dusk to listen for nocturnal critters or for Andrew to give you an introduction to the technical aspects of the audio equipment for field recording or the software used.

Saturday (B) A leisurely start today and after breakfast we'll take a listen to the various recordings and discuss these. Looking at them on a computer with visual 'spectrograms' is a chance to interpret what these mean and one final chance to discuss what we've learnt and say farewell. Travel back to Bairnsdale.
