Koalas fight for real-estate in trees on Cape Otway, overlooking a roaring southern ocean. Nearby, carnivorous snails hunt through ancient rainforest, dripping with filmy ferns. The Great Ocean Road sweeps majestically to Warrnambool, breeding ground for Southern Right Whales in winter and Little Penguins in summer. Descending into Tower Hill’s volcanic crater, you enter a living museum where emus, echidnas, koalas and kangaroos roam wild. Away from the Great Ocean Road’s most famous landmarks, these are some of the most exciting wildlife experiences in Australia.
- Contribute to valuable conservation work on Koalas and Tiger Quolls
- Participate in animal rehabilitation and monitoring work
- See Koalas, Eastern Grey Kangaroos, Emus and night animals with a local Aboriginal cooperative
- Discover the history of Warrnambool’s settlement
Day 1-2 This self-drive tour starts from Melbourne where you pick up your hire car and drive to the Great Ocean Road. Arriving at an exclusive eco lodge in the afternoon, you’ll be met by your hosts who specialise in award-winning conservation programs. Over the next two days, you can explore the property with dedicated ecologists, assist with the rehabilitation of injured and orphaned wildlife and participate in ecological monitoring and habitat restoration projects.
Day 3-4 After a drive to Warrnambool, you’ll check in at a luxury bayside resort for dinner. You’ll visit Tower Hill for a guided day and night walk in the mouth of an extinct volcano. You’ll also be guided by members of the Worn Gundidj Aboriginal community to see Emus, Eastern Grey Kangaroos and Koalas. Back in Warrnambool, you’re invited to spend time at the Flagstaff Hill maritime village. Seasonally, there is the opportunity to meet the Maremmas who guard Little Penguins on Middle Island.
Day 5 After breakfast in Warrnambool, you have the rest of the day to wind your way along the Great Ocean Road and photograph the ocean views enroute to Melbourne.
5 days mid sized car rental, 4 nights accommodation, shared wildlife experiences, 4 breakfasts, 1 lunch and 3 dinners.
Note, we can arrange all travel to and from tour locations, quote for group bookings, and tailor any packages as required.
This is only one example of a TAILORED tour. Tailoring doesn't mean more expensive ... it can often mean less. We can develop tours to suit budgets and interests. The price depends a lot on what you want to do, where you want to go (some destinations are more limited than others), how often and the level of comfort and guiding you need. Drawing off our extensive portfolio, we find trips fall roughly into these price categories. Drop us a line with where you want to go, for how long and your approximate budget and you might be surprised what we can do for you.
